I'm curious as to the process of making prints of artwork.

My friend's birthday is comin' up, and one of her presents consists of a portait painting thing I made of herself. Printing it out and giving it to her doesn't seem all that fancy, I was hoping to make it nice 'n glossy and purdy, but I have no idea how to do that '_' I tried looking up the process online, but I still don't get it -_-'
So if you know, could you possibly explain the print process to me in small simple words??? :please:
